El laboratorio del mangaka: los testimonios de la escritura de Akira Toriyama y Hirohiko Araki

Abstract

La narratología es una disciplina que ha excedido con creces al campo meramente literario y el ámbito de la historieta no es ajeno a ella. Es habitual hoy en día no sólo dar con manuales sobre la morfología del cómic, sino también instructivos y tutoriales de cómo crearlos. La industria del manga –es decir, la historieta de origen japonés– ha crecido exponencialmente en las últimas décadas y hoy en día es posible contar con el testimonio de mangaka (escritores de manga) de renombre que comparten sus experiencias y conocimientos sobre la laboriosa tarea de serializar una historia en este formato tan atractivo. En el siguiente trabajo, analizaremos y cotejaremos dos testimonios de artistas de manga consagrados: Akira Toriyama (Dr. Slump y Dragon Ball) y Hirohiko Araki (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure). Daremos cuenta no sólo de los procesos, herramientas y recursos narrativos que hacen al manga, sino también de los fundamentos que, según estos mangaka, hacen que una historieta tenga éxito.

Narratology is a discipline that has far exceeded the purely literary field, and the realm of comics is no stranger to it. Nowadays, it is common not only to find manuals on the morphology of comics but also guides and tutorials on how to create them. The manga industry –that is, japanese-origin comics– has grown exponentially in recent decades, and today, it is possible to access the testimonies of renowned mangakas (manga writers) who share their experiences and knowledge about the laborious task of serializing a story in this highly engaging format. In this study, we will analyze and compare the testimonies of two acclaimed manga artists: Akira Toriyama (Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball) and Hirohiko Araki (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure). We will examine not only the processes, tools, and narrative resources that define manga but also the fundamental principles that, according to these mangakas, determine the success of a comic.
